Annotation | Looks at the prevalence of hypertension in older people in Britain and the potential benefits of drug treatment and therapy. A number of randomised controlled trials have demonstrated the benefits of treating hypertension in older people, including patients aged 80 and over. Several drugs are available and the majority need combination therapy. Management can be challenging due to side effects, polypharmacy and orthostatic hypotension. (JL). |
