Annotation | Many older people in the UK are at risk of developing and dying from heat-related illnesses during a heatwave. This article defines the term heatwave and identifies the thermoregulatory responses to hot weather. Also discusses the effects of the ageing process on thermoregulation or core body temperature and outlines the symptoms of heatstroke and heat exhaustion. Finally the treatment of heat-related illnesses and their prevention are explained. (JL). |
