AnnotationAn important regional Horizon Scanning event was held in October 2009 by the North West Public Health Networks, chaired by Professor John Ashton CBE, Director of Public Health at NHS Cumbria. Keynote speakers included Professor Ray Tallis, Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Manchester and consultant physician in Health Care of the Elderly in Salford (1987-2006); Gillian Crosby, Director of the Centre for Policy on Ageing; Dr Anil Sharma, Consultant Physician and Peter Ashley speaking on dementia. The evidence based review and discussions from the Horizon Scanning event are contained in this report. This document summarises two pieces of work: a review of the literature on ageing and its implications for health and healthcare in the future; and the outcomes of a regional conference, Ageing: Future Planning, held on 6 October 2009. It includes consideration of: 1) Principally national, but also regional and international, trends in the age of the population, including environmental impacts; 2) New drugs and pharmaceuticals relevant to those aged 65+; 3) New technologies impacting those aged 65+; 4) Diagnostic tests for those aged 65+; 5) Rehabilitation and therapy for those aged 65+; 6) Public health and health promotion activities aimed at those aged 65.
