AnnotationThis briefing provides an overview and commentary on trends in the adult social care market over recent years. It is based on responsibilities of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) under the Care Standards Act 2000, which came to an end on 30 September 2010. The overview therefore gives a final definitive report on evidence gathered under this legislation. It looks only at the regulated adult social care market. This includes care homes, home (domiciliary) care services, nursing agencies and shared lives schemes (formerly known as adult placement schemes). The briefing concludes that: providers of services have improved the quality of care over time; there is stability in provision, but further growth will be needed to meet future care needs; people are increasingly being supported to live independently and in their own homes; and year-on-year, councils are commissioning better care homes and home care services.
