Annotation | The genesis of this special section of the Journal occurred in November 2006 at the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society of America's Religion, Spirituality and Aging Formal Interest Group. This group is comprised of practitioners, researchers, providers and other interested parties. A recurring concern of the group has been the strengths and limitations of assessments of religion and spirituality for older adults. So for the 2007 annual symposium, it was decided to address this issue of assessment with regard to the religious and cultural biases in the measures of religion and spirituality. The papers presented at the symposium form the core of this special section. To explore these issues in the symposium, the Co-Convener of the interest group, Allen Glicksman, developed a critique of the influence of religious and cultural biases in our conceptualization of religion and spirituality, and how these concepts are used in current measures. A number of prominent scholars in this area were invited to respond to Glicksman critique representing a variety of discipline. Glicksman's final response to these articles follows on pages 316-317.
