AnnotationThe genesis of this special section of the Journal occurred in November 2006 the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society of America's Religion, Spirituality and Aging Formal Interest Group. This group is comprised of practitioners, researchers, providers and other interested parties. A recurring concern of the group has been the strengths and limitations of assessments of religion and spirituality for older adults. So for the 2007 annual symposium, it was decided to address this issue of assessment with regard to the religious and cultural biases in the measures of religion and spirituality. The papers presented at the symposium form the core of this special section. To explore these issues in the symposium, the Co-Convener of the interest group, Allen Glicksman, developed a critique of the influence of religious and cultural biases in our conceptualization of religion and spirituality, and how these concepts are used in current measures. Glicksman's critique begins with the crucial question: What do we mean by religion and spirituality? Glicksman examines the perspectives of traditional Judaism vis-a-vis the influence of Evangelical Protestantism, as a test case, to look at the assumptions that underlie research methodologies and the assessments they contain. Responses and reflections follow in the rest of the section, with a final response by Glicksman himself. (KJ)
