Annotation | This edition of The Journal focuses on the 'livable community' and explores innovations that improve mobility, housing, safety, the environment, and quality of life for people of all ages - all factors that make a city 'age-friendly'. It is broadly argued that improvements that benefit children and parents, and disabled persons will directly benefit older people; thereby helping to create a sense of intergenerational cooperation in the wider community. Examples of 'age friendly cities' are highlighted - initiatives that promote active ageing in four areas: community and civic participation; housing, public spaces and transportation; and health and social services. Contributors include New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Belgian Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health, Laurette Onkelinx; Universal Design expert Kawauchi Yoshihiko; and others.
