AnnotationIn the fourth in this series of six articles on the brain and dementia care, the author describes the changes to memory functions dementia often brings, particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Most people with dementia experience memory problems from early in the condition, particularly the learning and retention of new information or experiences. This article aims to explain how the human memory system is organised and the consequences of persistent but gradual damage to some parts of this system. There are two key messages in this review: first, that it is not correct to to think that people with AD have "no memory"; and second, the importance of life history work in helping to understand many of the confusions experienced by people with dementia.
