AnnotationThis study explores the potential of the General Household Survey (GHS) to provide an inter-censal measure of Health Expectancies (HEs) in small areas grouped by area deprivation. The 2001 Census and GHS 2001-05 both show a decline in health status and HEs with increasing area deprivation. Consistency between them shows the latter is suitable in providing an inter-censal measure of HEs. Findings serve as a useful measure for the targeting of interventions to reduce health inequalities.
