AnnotationPeople aged 85 and older (the oldest old) are the fastest growing group in many countries, but their health and factors influencing their health trajectories need better description. This article outlines the findings of cross-sectional analysis of baseline data (2006-07) from a cohort study of 1042 people born in 1921 and registered with a participating general practitioner (GP) in Newcastle upon Tyne or North Tyneside. The data comprised information from detailed health assessment and/or review of general practice medical records; participants could decline elements of the protocol. Among these 85 year olds, levels of self-rated health and functional ability were good, despite substantial levels of disease and impairment. (RH).
