AnnotationHow has the AIDS epidemic affected support for older individuals in sub-Saharan Africa? This is a summary of a paper published on bmj.com, for which the authors used household survey data from 1991 to 2006 on 123,176 older people aged 60+ from 22 African countries. An increase in annual AIDS mortality of one death per 1000 people was associated with a 1.5% increase in the proportion of older people living alone (95% CI 1.2% to 1.9%) and a 9.4% increase in the number of older people living in missing generation households (95% CI 0.3% to 0.6%). Increases in AIDS mortality were also associated with older individuals accompanied by at least one child. Previous studies have examined the effect of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the living arrangements of older people in specific countries or regions, but it is unclear whether these findings apply beyond the populations considered. This is the first multi-year, cross national study of the relation between AIDS mortality and the living arrangements of older individuals in Africa. The findings suggest that reducing deaths from AIDS in Africa could provide substantial benefits for this under-recognised population. (RH).
