AnnotationThe author explores the idea of an asset approach to community building and how it ties in with the concept of the Big Society, but says that its development should not be seen as a way of cost cutting. He does this by reviewing a report published by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) in March 2010, before the General Election and before David Cameron had formally introduced his idea for the Big Society. The report, 'A glass half-full: how an asset approach can improve community health and well-being', is by Jane Foot with Trevor Hopkins on behalf of the Improvement and Development Agency Healthy Communities Team (http://www.idea.gov.uk/idk/aio/18410498). 'A glass half full' is a scoping paper, which aims to help local authorities achieve a better balance between service delivery and community building. This review comments that an asset approach fits in with other agendas such as personalisation, citizenship, and community development, also the "social capital" concept. (RH).
