AnnotationDoes regular follow-up in memory clinics with comprehensive evaluation and targeted management decrease the rate of functional decline in community-dwelling patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD)? This is an summary of a paper published on bmj.com, which reports a cluster randomised 24-month trial conducted with 50 memory clinics in France. Participants had mild to moderate AD: 557 were assigned to a control group, while 574 were assigned to an intervention comprising a twice-yearly consultation for patients and their caregivers, with guidelines on the management of problems identified during the assessment. The primary outcome was change on the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study activities of daily living (ADCS-ADL) scale, assessed at 12 and 24 months. patient education and social support as well as regular follow-up visits are widely recommended for the management of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The study found that this kind of broad intervention does not work when applied to memory clinics alone without direct involvement of the general practitioner (GP) or a case manager. (RH).
