Annotation | Ahead of a general election, Age Concern and Help the Aged state that the next government must seek a mandate to tackle a range of issues affecting older people. While recognising that the election will be fought in the context of recession and cuts in public expenditure, action is called for on five themes. First, on equal treatment, are the requirements for legislation to outlaw age discrimination, the ending of forced retirement, and support for unemployed people aged 50+. Second, to improve standards of living, reform of the benefits system, linking the Basic State Pension to earnings, and tackling fuel poverty are sought. Third, care and support must be included within any safeguards for health-related spending; reform of the system is an urgent priority; and essential features of Attendance Allowance must be retained. Fourth, on health, treating older patients with dignity must be at the top of the NHS reform agenda. Lastly, on age-friendly neighbourhoods, all new homes must be built to Lifetime Home standards, the bus pass concession for over 60s must be retained, and local authorities must do more to create age-friendly services and public spaces, and to safeguard essential local amenities.
