AnnotationThe importance of building geriatric care facilities in cities such as Benghazi in Libya, in order to tackle morbidity and mortality in old age, is highlighted. The analysis in this article aims to: understand the pressing problems of older people; foresee future requirements for healthcare needs; and suggest caregiving systems that conform with the international mandates (specified in the Vienna and Madrid International Plans of Action on Ageing, 1982 and 2002 respectively). The analysis shows that major problems requiring surgical emergency care in eastern Libya include: falls and injuries; gastrointestinal tract diseases; cerebro-vascular diseases; and respiratory diseases.
