AnnotationChronic heart failure (CHF) is a common syndrome, and its symptoms include exercise intolerance due to breathlessness and fatigue with cardiac dysfunction. As a group, patients with CHF suffer ongoing symptoms, recurrent hospitalisations and a high mortality rate, but modern medical therapy can reduce each of these features. Many patients can, therefore, be managed appropriately in primary care. Part one of this article reviews diagnostic tools and medical therapy used in the management of CHF. (RH).
