AnnotationWhat should the next government's priorities be for improving dementia care? Service users, carers, practitioners and service laders give their views. Ruth Sutherland, acting chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, calls for increased investment in the social care system and in funding for dementia research. Ruth Cartwright, England joint manager of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) calls for the NHS to stop considering dementia as a social care condition and for the NHS to fund care. Barbara Pointon, who cared for her husband who died in 2007, wants money to help carers who provide support at home and in helping with identifying and dealing with perplexing behaviour patterns. Ken Clasper, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2004 describes his experience of being denied medication and having to retire early as a result. Jenny Owen, co-lead of the national dementia strategy and president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) questions whether funding has reached the right place. David Anderson, chair, Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatry calls for: required implementation of the national strategy in health and social care services; quality standards that commissioners and providers must meet; investing in research; and a coherent approach to dissemination of evidence and best practice leading to service re-design with integration of health and social care.
