Annotation'Fulfilling and rewarding lives' sets out the Government's strategy for adults with autism; it builds on the Autism Act 2009 and refers to policies such as personalisation and independent living. It draws on the findings of the National Audit Office report, 'Supporting adults with autism through adulthood' (2009) and the recommendations from the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts' report (2009) of the same title. In line with terminology adopted by organisations such as the National Autistic Society (NAS), the term "autism" is used as an umbrella term for all such conditions, including Asperger syndrome. Chapters of the strategy look at increasing awareness and understanding of autism; developing a clear, consistent pathway for diagnosis of autism; improving access for adults with autism to the services and support they need to live independently within the community; helping adults with autism into work; and enabling local partners to develop relevant services for adults with autism to meet identified needs and priorities. The latter chapter includes a section on enabling adults with autism and their families to have greater choice and control over where and how they live. The strategy includes model examples of dedicated service provision for adults with autism that have been adopted in different areas of the country. It also lists policies that apply to adults with autism. (RH).
