Annotation | A growing and ageing population will require significant changes in the use of health care resources. This is the final report in a series of three commissioned by the Health Research Board (HRB) to investigate the impact of demographic change on the demand for and delivery of health care in Ireland to 2021 and the implications that this has for the future planning of the health services in Ireland. Analyses by researchers at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) show that current health care practices will become increasingly unsustainable in the face of demographic change. Their findings suggest a number of developments that need to occur in order to successfully shift the emphasis of care from acute hospitals to primary, continuing and community care. They also make projections regarding the need for long-term health and social care for older people. One of the estimates used suggests a requirement for an additional 13,324 residential long term care (LTC) places from 2007-2021, or approximately 888 per annum, implying a residential LTC utilisation rate of 4.5% of people aged 65 years and over.
