Annotation | This report seeks to assess the contribution being made to the property repair and maintenance needs of poorer owner occupiers through their involvement in Local Exchange Trading Systems and Schemes (LETS). LETS are self-help schemes whereby groups of people exchange skills and services using a local currency. The findings and recommendations are drawn from a one in eight survey of LETS directories, a detailed questionnaire completed by 120 members, and group discussions in eight UK locations. The authors suggest that government should recognise the potential of LETS to contribute to current programmes aimed at reducing welfare dependency and developing skills and self-reliance. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has supported this project as part of its programme of research and innovative development projects. (RH). |
