AnnotationProvision for Asian older people in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne at the start of the 1990s found gaps in services. This survey was based on questionnaires given to 25 local Asian elders, and looked at specific ways in which local support and day-care organisations might alter or extend their services to more appropriately include ethnic minority needs. Incidence of reported loneliness and boredom were very high. All members of the sample were on some form of medication, and there were indications that this was being used as a"comforter" against social isolation and lack of purposeful activities. Recommendations were made that local organisations make separate provision according to specific cultural needs. (RH).
