Annotation | This work of art is one of a series (Great Works) chosen by Tom Lubbock for closer scrutiny. This painting depicts an old woman cooking eggs, and also features a young boy and everyday utensils. Velazquez painted this picture as a "demonstration piece" before he was 20. Nevertheless, it is regarded as a worthy depiction of "human flesh old and young" and a bold choice for its humble everyday subject. The painting is on display in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. (KJ/RH). |
