AnnotationThis revised edition of the 1993 report has not largely changed but the statistical data has been updated to reflect information available up to June 1997. This report, like the original, draws on a wide range of research carried out, particularly by the Welfare State Programme at the Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines (STICERD) at the London School of Economics. It also draws on a wide range of research on social policy and housing issues supported by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) at other institutions. So the report lays out the background to the debate and key areas where welfare services are under review and discusses the range of policy options. Separate areas of social security, such as pensions and services for the elderly population are examined. (KJ).
