AnnotationThe ageing of the population has led policy-makers to put a high priority on extending working life. However, little attention has been paid to creating the conditions to enable people to work beyond retirement age; and traditional views about older workers still shape the attitudes of many employers. This report presents the findings of a telephone survey of 1,500 people aged 50-75 about their work aspirations and the barriers facing them. It reveals that many assumptions about this age group are wrong, and that the majority of workers age 50+ (62% of women and 59% of men) want to continue working beyond state pension age. Also included are three case studies of employers and individuals benefiting from age positive practices at Domestic & General, Centrica, and West Bromwich Tool and Engineering Company. (RH).
