Annotation | In Malta, those aged 60+ account for 18% of the island's population, and people are living longer: life expectancy is 77 years for males and 81 for females. This article considers the image, roles and functions of older people in Malta; the central role of the family in providing care, coupled with changes to the extended family format and the resulting difficulties in caring for older people; and services and help available for caring for older people. The Government also has a role in providing for its citizens through its welfare state, as does society in identifying possible needs that are being overlooked. (RH). |
