Annotation | This article reviews the past decade as we begin a new one with the UK financial system in poor shape, which should, the author argues, make us re-evaluate our relationship with money. The author promotes the belief that "the best things in life really are free" and this involves caring and volunteering rather than consumerism which he believes is "not good training for later life". "Helping people to participate and contribute, to remain active and independent for as long as possible, is." Money should be used as a means to something more in life, not as an end in itself, otherwise as a nation we risk endless repetition of financial boom and bust cycles, with all of their attendant human costs.
