AnnotationThe main aim of this scoping study was to assess the extent to which existing models of best practice in dementia care were sensitive to sight loss issues. The study reviewed the literature; reviewed the scientific research on sight loss and people with dementia; examined how sensitive models of dementia care practice are to sight loss issues; and explored how sensitive dementia care providers are to sight loss issues. Data were collected by database searches of the academic literature, interviewing seven practitioners, and auditing working practices on four care homes for older people. Among recommendations are developing and piloting a more integrated sensory model of practice, integrating the elements of the enriched and Nightingale-based models; and seeking to influence implementation of the National Dementia Strategy (NDS) for England. A report in the form of an Occasional Paper (same title) is also available from the Trust. (RH).
