Annotation | Older people are the main users of many community health and social care services. The Government strategy, 'Opportunity age' (Cm 6466; 2005) includes a vision of services which promote independence and well-being. In the context of a forthcoming White Paper on community health and social care, Age Concern commissioned Age Concern Research Services to undertake nine focus groups with older people across England, including older carers, whose voices are less likely to be heard through formal consultation processes. This report finds that most respondents consider decent health and social care is a basic right, but which for many is denied. The principles of public service for older people set out in Opportunity age' appear to be supported by the aspirations of older people themselves, but are not matched by their experiences. The translation of the principles into practice should be a key priority. (RH). |
