AnnotationAs elsewhere in the world, more people in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries are reaching old age (age 60+). Women in the sub-region have a greater life expectancy than men; and women aged 80+ are the fastest growing age segment in the sub-region's older populations. Given that these women may become progressively ill, disabled and/or frail, a sharp increase may be expected in need for care and help with activities of daily living (ADFLs), financial and subsistence support, and informal long-term care. This article discusses older women's burden of disease; the implications for health and social care provision; the gendered nature of caregiving; older women's vulnerability and care needs; and care and support best practices. It itemises the sorts of planning and provision that are needed to cater appropriately for older women in the SSA sub-region. (RH).
