Annotation | India has a tradition of providing care to older people, and this article outlines some of the legal provisions that are meant to protect and ensure older people's dignity and well-being. The article also highlights programmes and schemes that provide a safety net for older people: the Annapurna scheme (food security); old age pension; day-care centres; old age homes; Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP); and assistance for the construction of old age homes or service centres. It also lists the roles of those government ministries or departments useful to older people. The role of HelpAge India in promoting older people's care is also acknowledged. (RH). |
