Annotation | Better Jobs Better Care (BJBC) was the United States' largest single initiative to reduce the high vacancy and turnover rates of direct care workers, and to improve workforce quality through both policy and practice changes. It was funded between 2002 and 2006 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Atlantic Philanthropies. The first few articles in this special issue of The Gerontologist examine the scheme's origins, and present findings from the BJBC demonstration program. Other articles examine factors that predict better retention of nursing assistants and care workers; organisational and management interventions; expanding the long-term care and direct care labour pool; and measuring person-directed care.
