Annotation | This supplement represents some of the diverse work of the Hidden Costs, Invisible Contributions research programme intended to deepen understanding of "the place in society of 'dependent' adults, specifically older adults and adults with chronic illness or disability". Costs are defined as 'hidden' because they are incurred as part of individuals' private lives. The same applies to "invisible contributions": these are not counted in the way entitlements to public contributions are, in the sense that they may be taken for granted as part of what families do. Most of the ten papers in this supplement are about families, and a recurrent theme is the pressing need for home care and home support services. Papers offer both Canadian and international perspectives on caregiving. (KJ/RH). |
