Annotation | Older people with significant support needs constitute a large and growing sector of our population. Recent developments in independent living have been slow to respond to the needs and aspirations of older people, whose voices are rarely heard. There is a strong case for fundamental change in long-term care, based on older people's vision for a good life. This report presents important messages from a research project exploring older people's experiences of living with high support needs, commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and undertaken by the Older People's Programme (OPP) and the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA). The research involved a scoping study; a series of discussions with older people, their families and professionals; synthesis of key messages with a diverse advisory group; local feedback; and a national 'sounding board' event to identify the key messages to be shared. The report recommends a multifaceted change programme to enable this vision to be achieved for individuals and their families, for local populations, and at a national policy and societal level.
