AnnotationProfessor Sir Michael Marmot has been asked to advise the Secretary of State for Health on the future development of a health inequalities strategy in England post 2010. Age Concern and Help the Aged comment on issues raised in the consultation document on the first phase of he Strategic Review. First, it is suggested that the Review should consider 'financial capability' in order to reduce 'material inequalities. Second, implementing the Lifetime Neighbourhood strategy will contribute to reducing health inequalities. Third, older people should be considered as a vulnerable group. Fourth, equality legislation is essential to reduce health inequalities. Fifth, an ageing society should be considered as one of the cross-cutting challenges. The organisation has considered age discrimination in health and social care in more detail in its Response to the National Review of Age Discrimination in Health and Social Care call for evidence.
