AnnotationSince 1994, the European Union Directive 94/19/EC on Deposit Guarantee Schemes (DGS) has ensured that all Member States have a safety net for depositors in place, should banks fail to pay. Events in 2007 and 2008 have led to depositors having decreased confidence in financial institutions' handling of payments and savings. Age Concern and Help the Aged comment on the DGS review. (RH).
