AnnotationThe National Programme for Improving Mental Health and wellbeing (formerly the National Programme for Improving Mental Health) is a key part of the Scottish Executive's health improvement and social justice policy development. The main findings are presented of this fourth survey, which was commissioned to track progress towards meeting the aims of the National Programme since the first survey in 2002. The survey was carried out by Ipsos MORI Scotland and conducted among a representative sample of 1,117 adults aged 16+ in Scotland. These research findings outline results on the themes general health and lifestyle; informal support networks; mental health and well-being; experiences of mental health problems; attitudes towards mental health problems; attitudes towards specific symptoms of mental health problems; and sources of information on mental health problems. One of the most consistent messages emerging from the survey is that significant inequalities remain in the distribution of mental health problems. A link between social isolation and both poor mental health and below average mental well-being is also indicated. (RH).
