AnnotationMortality data for the year 2004 were analysed for the residents of the largest long-term care institution in Malta. Results compared well with other institutions worldwide where up to 50% die within 2 years of admission. Residents at St Vincent De Paule Residence (SVPR) mainly die of infections causes whilst worldwide, residents tend to die of cardiac related causes. The unreliability of death certificates has been shown in many studies and this plays a significant bias in the data collected. (RH).
