AnnotationSouth Africa continues to experience age discrimination, even though it has been outlawed constitutionally. This essay is a revised version of a paper published under the same title in 'Human rights in an ageing world: perspectives from around the world', edited by Nora Macleod (ILC UK, 2007). It notes that although the Older Persons Act provides a comprehensive framework for the protection of older people's rights, there remain challenges such as underdevelopment, chronic poverty, the effects of HIV/AIDS and gender inequality.
