Annotation | A trustee and founder member of the Older People's Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) comments that the meaning of "advocacy" is not fully understood. John Miles comments that "advocacy" is frequently used in the sense of speaking up for an individual or a group. He reviews the position of advocacy with older people as the government pursues its transformation of social care. Among definitions applicable to older people he cites Andrew Dunning (1995): that advocacy involves a "partnership between a [trained] advocate and an [older] person who needs to secure or exercise [his or her] rights, choices and interests", and thus more appropriate.
