AnnotationWhat is the relation between the care provided in the final three months of life and the prevalence of and types of end of life care in Belgium? End of life decisions including euthanasia or physician assisted suicide are not related to a lower use of palliative care in Belgium but instead often occur within the context of multidisciplinary care. This summary article outlines the findings of a 2-year nationwide mortality retrospective study in 2005, which collected observational data via the Sentinel Network of General Practitioners, an epidemiological surveillance system representative of all Belgian general practitioners (GPs). This is a summary of a paper that was published on bmj.com as BMJ 2009: 339:b2772. (RH).
