AnnotationThis leaflet is intended as a brief guide to the reform of the adult care and support system in England and signposts the current consultation that is being held for all to participate in. The consultation ends on 13 November 2009. Copies of the Green Paper launched in July, 'Shaping the future of care together', can also be obtained via the website. The Green Paper explains how the current care and support system is struggling to meet the needs of our society. Designed in the 1940s, when life expectancy was shorter and social attitudes and expectations were very different, the social welfare system needs to be updated. The Paper sets out a vision for a National Care Service that is far, simple and affordable for all adults in England. It makes proposals about how the system should be organised and paid for and the 16-week public consultation, the Big Care Debate, is being conducted to gather people's views on the proposals. (KJ).
