AnnotationThis issue of International Psychogeriatrics includes the International Psychogeriatric Association consensus statement on defining and measuring treatment benefits in dementia, as well as papers presented at a 2-day conference at Canterbury Cathedral in 2006 devoted to the development of the consensus statement. Papers relate to: what outcomes matter to people with dementia and their caregivers; how these should be measured and what they mean; cognitive change as an outcome; biological outcome measures; quality of life; neuropsychiatric symptoms (also known as BPSD); global measures of change; the relevance of different outcome measures to various cultures; activities of daily living (ADLs); economic outcomes; and the regulator perspective. Agreement on key points of the consensus statement was achieved at the conference, the statement being subsequently refined by a process of circulation among participants. (RH).
