AnnotationObjectives of this Canadian study are to describe the characteristics of older people who score 1 or more on the CAGE (Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-Opener) questionnaire of alcohol problems; and to determine if depressive symptoms are associated with alcohol misuse after accounting for other factors. In a cross-sectional sample of people aged 65+ from the Manitoba Study of Health and Aging (MSHA), trained interviewers initially interviewed participants in 1991-1992 and re-interviewed them in 1996-1997. Data from Time 2 were used: 1028 people were included in the analysis. Males were more likely to score positive on the CAGE questionnaire. After adjusting for gender, age and education, there was a strong association between depressive symptoms and alcohol misuse. Poor self-rated health and impairments in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) were also associated with alcohol misuse. Attention to depressive symptoms and functional status may be important in the care of older people with alcohol misuse; physicians should enquire about their older patients' use of alcohol. (RH).
