Annotation | Dementia is a rapidly growing public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. In the absence of formal services, there is an urgent need to develop interventions designed to improve the lives of people with dementia and their families. This study tests the effectiveness of the 10/66 caregiver intervention with 60 family caregivers of people aged 65+ in Moscow; 30 were randomised to receive the intervention, and 30 medical care as usual only, with assessment at baseline and 6 months. The caregiver education and training intervention was delivered over 5 weekly half-hour sessions and was made up of three modules: assessment, basic education about dementia; and training regarding specific problem behaviours. Compared with controls, caregivers in the intervention group reported large and statistically significant net improvements in burden at 6-month follow-up. No group differences were found on caregiver psychological distress and patient and caregiver quality of life. The low-level intervention seems to be as effective, if not more so, than similar interventions applied in high-income countries. (RH). |
