AnnotationThis is the first Healthcare Commission sponsored national audit of continence care, and presents results from the audit in primary care, secondary care and care home settings. The aims were to: improve care for older people with continence problems as highlighted in 'Good practice in continence services' (Department of Health, 2000); demonstrate variation in standards of care relating to the management of continence problems in older people across different healthcare settings; enable healthcare settings to compare the quality of their continence care compared with evidence based criteria; and monitor the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) milestone for establishing integrated continence serviced by April 2004. The report confirms the high distribution rates of urinary and faecal incontinence in secondary care and care home settings, reasons for which include inadequate assessment of continence, and containment rather than cure.
