AnnotationIn Japan, the world-class long-term care insurance system has become entrenched in older people's lives, but there has not been much use of the adult guardianship system that started at the same time. As the number of older people with dementia increase, this will be important for ensuring that older people can make their own decisions, lead a dignified and appropriate life, and be protected from infringements of their rights. Referring to examples from other countries, the authors discuss the problems of the current adult guardianship system and think about how to ensure more use of this system. (RH).
