Annotation | Good stroke care is not just about the acute stage: services must be designed from the paramedic's involvement through to social care post-discharge from hospital. This article considers whether stroke patients are receiving the treatment they need; and suggests priorities for improving stroke services, along with sources for further information. It highlights results of the Royal College of Physicians' national sentinel stroke audit, particularly the importance of hospitals having a stroke unit with beds reserved for stroke patients, since the first few hours are critical for making a diagnosis and decreasing the risk of disability and death.
