AnnotationThe Primary Care Foundation was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) to undertake a review of urgent care in general practice. The project undertaken explored the practical steps that general practitioners (GPs) and their staff take to improve patient care and reduce pressure on the wider healthcare system. Eight pilot practices in Bolton, Doncaster, Lambeth and Plymouth participated. The focus is on three simple questions concerning care for patients who contact their general practice rather than a hospital A&E with an urgent need: will they get through, will they be identified, and will they be seen rapidly? This report makes recommendations on access; the capacity of general practice to meet demand; the assessment made in an initial call; clinical assessment; and implementation. It also covers action points for practices, primary care organisations, and suppliers of telephones and IT systems. (RH).
