Annotation | With gerontology boomers beginning to collect their social security cheques, this article challenges gerontology professionals to transform the jobs, services, programmes, and institutions that will allow the boomers to realise their dreams and goals. Gerontology educators, practitioners, and researchers will need to collaborate with boomers who have a history of creating change and are likely to redefine retirement. This article describes the boomer cohort, provides a brief summary of an empowerment paradigm, offers six examples of movements that are beginning to empower boomers, and ends with a call to action. According to the author, there is a need to educate our colleagues and the general public about the innovations that are emerging, evaluate them in a broader and more coordinated way, and help promote them by partnering with the coming cohort of gerontology boomers. The article was written before the economic downturn in autumn 2008, so the author agrees with Neufeld's assessment that if the US economy cannot be rescued, the boomers will not realise their ambitions, and everyone else will be in trouble, too. Rosalie Kane's focus has been on on older adults who need long-term supportive services. However, Haber believes that in the last 10 years, more attention has been paid to "derailing policies that increase risks to the poor ... than to fostering polices that protect the disadvantaged". Lastly, Whittington believes that the link between Haber's examples and evidence of empowerment trends is not strong; in addition "empowerment is unlikely to be under our control". (KJ/RH). |
