The purpose of this guidance is to establish principles for best practice in the care of older people in all settings where nursing care is provided, in both community and hospital settings. It uses quotations from 'The Code: standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives' (NMC, 2008) illustrative of the importance of having highly skilled nurses who can deal with the complexity of the health and social care needs with which older people present.
